Dynamite Dad Contest

Congratulations to the four Carroll County students and their fathers who were recognized as winners in this year’s Dynamite Dad Contest!

We asked students to tell us in 100 words or less why their dads were awesome. And they did! This year’s winners are: Virginia Zellers, 6th Grade, East Middle School, and her father, Joe; Adrianne Holocker, 7th Grade, Sykesville Middle School, and her father, Eric; Sara Joy Myers, 1st Grade, Homeschooled, Union Bridge, and her father, John; Chamberlyn Schafer, 5th Grade, Carroll Lutheran School, Westminster, and her father, Pastor David Schafer.

The winners and their dads were recognized at a unique awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 12, 6:30 p.m., at TownMall Westminster.

Students read their entries to their dads who followed with some rich comments of their own. The fathers received special gifts of a father/child portrait from Fine Portraiture by Michele, a collection of board games, and a copy of the movie Courageous. Winners and their dads  also enjoyed dinner at Chick-fil-A following the program. Special guest speaker for the evening was Jimmy Page, National Vice-President of Field Ministry and National Director of Health and Fitness Ministry for The Fellowship of Christian Athletes. And, fun, family-centered music was presented by Music With Monte.

The purpose of this annual contest is to raise awareness of the importance of father involvement in the lives of their children.  Half of all children born to women under 30 are born to single mothers, placing children at increased risk in every measurable area. A father's presence and involvement in the home and or in the life of his child increases safety for women and children and reduces a child’s risk for suicide, teen pregnancy, and drug and alcohol abuse.
